Total number of years of schooling

The general upper secondary school is based on courses with no specified year-classes. The syllabus covers three years of studies; the syllabus for general upper secondary school comprises at least 75 courses (duration on average 38 hours) or, in the case of adult general upper secondary studies, at least 44 courses (duration on average 28 hours).

The total nominal duration of the studies is 12 years, but personal study paths may mean shorter or longer study times.

General requirements for access to higher education

Both general upper secondary school certificates and vocational education certificates give formal access to higher education.


The admission to higher education is under the jurisdiction of higher education institutions.
