University Admissions in Sweden, together with Sweden's universities, is responsible for admission to bachelor's and master's courses and programmes.

The qualification could be obtained through studies at an upper secondary school or municipal adult education.

  • Upper secondary school:
    • There are 6 national programs leading to the Higher education preparatory diploma.
    • Requirements for the diploma are a total of 2 500 credits, of which passing grades provide 2 250 credits (90%).
    • The following courses are always required (with passing grade): Swedish or Swedish as a second language 1, 2 and 3, English 5 and 6, Mathematics 1b or 1c, a pass in the diploma project.
    • Grading system: a scale from A to F, with pass grade E.
  • Adult education
    • Course based individualized pathways leading to the Higher education preparatory diploma.
    • Requirements for the diploma are a total of 2 400 credits, of which passing grades provide 2 250 credits.
    • The following courses are always required (with passing grade): Swedish or Swedish as a second language 1, 2 and 3, English 5 and 6, Mathematics 1b or 1c, a pass in the diploma project.
    • Grading system: a scale from A to F, with pass grade E.

For students starting upper secondary school before 2011 the qualification is named “Slutbetyg från ett fullständigt nationellt eller specialutformat program i gymnasieskolan” (Final grades from complete national or specially designed program). For students in adult education starting before 2012 and in some cases until 2020 the qualification is named “Slutbetyg från gymnasial vuxenutbildning” (Final grades from municipal adult education at upper secondary level).

This qualification is regulated by the Swedish Parliament, the Swedish government and the Swedish National Agency for Education.

  • Upper secondary school: For students starting upper secondary school in 2011 and onward.
  • Adult education: From 2012 and onward.
